The instructions on this page cover the configuration of Netscape, on a home PC, to receive NSU e-mail.

You can configure your home PC using Netscape to check your NSU e-mail account; however, you will have to make changes to Netscape preferences each time you want to receive e-mail from a different e-mail account. The solution to this is to use multiple profiles in Netscape. One profile would point to your NSU e-mail account and the other to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) account.

After working through the instructions on this page, see Adding a NSU profile to Netscape Profile Manager on a home PC which will allow you to keep your NSU e-mail separate from the e-mail you get from your ISP.

Open Netscape:
  • Click the Mailbox icon on the Netscape toolbar (it looks like an Inbox) to open Netscape Messenger.

When Netscape Messenger opens:

(1.) Left-click on Edit on the top menu bar.

  • The Edit menu opens.

  • Find Preferences at the bottom of the Edit menu.

(2.) Left-click Preferences to open the Preferences window.

When the Preferences window opens there will be a section on the left titled Category:

(1.) Click the plus sign in the box to the left of Mail and Newsgroups (if the box contains a minus sign, go on to the next step).
(2.) In the subdirectory that drops down under Mail and Newsgroups, click Mail Servers. Make the following changes in the Mail Servers dialog box that now appears in the right side of the Preferences window.
(3.) Change the addresses in the textbox to the right of Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server to "Your ISP's e-mail ADDRESS"
(e.g. mail.ionet.com)
.
(4.) Enter your user name for "Your ISP" in the textbox beside Outgoing mail Server user name.
(5.)

To the right of Incoming Mail Servers, left-click on Edit to open the "Mail Server Properties" dialog box.
Note: The image below titled "Mail Server Properties" will show the available fields.

Mail Server Properties:

(1.) Left-click on the General tab at the top of the dialog box to ensure it is the active tab.
(2) In the Server Name: field, key in cherokee.nsuok.edu
(3.) In the User Name: field, key in your NSU userid.
(4.) Left-click on OK to save the changes to the Mail Server Properties.
Note: You will be returned to the Preferences window.

Back in the Preferences window,
under Category | Mail & Newsgroups, you will see Identity:

Identity:
Configure Identity to allow others to reply to your e-mail and have the reply delivered to NSU.

(1.) Left Click Identity and the Identity options will be displayed to the right in the Preferences window.
(2.) Key in Your Name as you would like Netscape to display it.
(3.) Key in your NSU e-mail address.
(4.) Left-click on OK to close the Preferences window.

Congratulations!
