Campus Housing and Connecting to the University Network (NSUnet)
May 16, 2005
Accessing the Internet/NSUnet from Campus Housing is changing!
In order to connect to the Internet you must go through the Campus Network (NSUnet). Currently students accessing the Internet/NSUnet from Campus Housing (Residence Halls, Family Housing, and Suites) can browse the web and utilize other Internet related resources without having to log on to the NSUnet.
Starting on May 16, 2005, accessing the Internet/NSUnet from Campus Housing will require PC validation and login authentication to the NSUnet before being able to access the Internet/NSUnet. This means that in order to log on, the computer will need to be set up correctly and your NSU UserID and NSU Password will be required.
Accessing the Internet/NSUnet from Campus Housing will require that you "authenticate" (or tell the network who you are). When you open an Internet browser window, the browser will be redirected to an authentication page. After entering your NSU UserID and NSU Password, you will be prompted to download and install a validation client, called Cisco Clean Access Agent.
After the validation process is complete and your computer has all required updates, which may require multiple reboots before completing, you will be logged into the NSUnet and be able to access the Internet. Authentication is required every 14 days, or if the computer is shut down for more than 30 minutes. This new validation client will have a computer icon called Cisco Clean Access Agent, which will be located in the System Tray (this is the area located next to the computer clock). To login and logout, you will right-click on that icon for complete menu items.
If your computer requires updates, the Cisco Clean Access Agent will redirect your browser to remediation sites. Please note that access to the Internet/NSUnet requires that your computer have all Microsoft Critical Updates installed and an approved antivirus software with the latest updates installed and running. If you do not have an approved antivirus program, we will provide Symantec Antivirus free for use while you are enrolled.
Approved Antivirus Program:
- Symantec Antivirus (Corporate and Professional)
- McAfee (Corporate and Professional)
- Trend Micro
Users wanting to access the Internet/NSUnet from Campus Housing must keep up with all security patches and Windows Critical Updates. This will help keep your computer, and the NSUnet, virus free!
Starting May 16, 2005, beginning with Seminary Suites and expanding to all other Campus Housing locations, residents will be required to use the Cisco Clean Access Agent to connect to the Internet/NSUnet.
Why the Change?
Viruses, which can be a simple nuisance or can be devastating, destroying all information on your computer's hard drive and can compromise other networked computers. This is a solution to help prevent such attacks, and is intended to deny "infected" computers access to the NSUnet. We hope this will result in a clean and consistent network at our university.
