What
about an NT password?
You
will need an NT password to use your system. We will
show you what it is and how to use it.

Where
is my file server?
NSUnet
is changing from the Novell file operating system to
Microsoft NT 4.0. You now logon to one NT network that
serves the whole campus. Your data has been moved from
your Novell account to your new network file area, Drive
L:.

Why
NT?
NT
has proven to be stable and reliable. NT also offers
a level of file security not available on Windows 95
or 98. One standard operating system is better supported
than multiple operating systems.

PC. An example of CCM's further use would be if
your PC becomes corrupted, since your data is
safe on the network filer, a fresh installation
of campus standard programs could be installed
on your PC in as little as two hours.

Where
are my files?
Network
storage areas are the home for all documents previously
on your PC. Files for the faculty and staff are stored
on a network filer called Employee. Files for
students are stored on a network filer called Student.
The filers are networked, secured and backed-up. Being
networked allows you to access your data anywhere on
campus. Security comes from the assurance that your
data is only available to you via your NT password.
Data on the filers is backed up hourly. Files and programs
are stored in the following areas:
I:
is the transfer area on the student filer on which faculty
members can create and place files in their own folders.
These files are then available for students to copy.
I: is available to all faculty and students.
J:
is the location of programs that run from the Employee
Filer. Some programs are only available to certain employees.
J: is available to all faculty and staff.
K:
is the location of programs that run from the Student
Filer. K: is available to all faculty and students.
L:
is the default location of your data files.
A MyFiles folder contains documents created with campus
standard programs. A Netscape folder on the L: drive
holds your email, bookmarks, and address book. Every
faculty, staff, and student has total control over their
account on the L: drive. Files and folders can be created,
copied, moved and deleted by the account user. If you
need to logon to NT in a different office, your data
files are still available to you on the L: drive. If
in the unlikely event your PC becomes corrupted, your
PC can be completely rebuilt in about two and one half
hours. L: is available to faculty, staff, and students.

What
about my other programs, and Netscape plug-ins?
Generally,
the campus standard software allows you to conduct University
business. If you require other software to be reinstalled
and have the software, call the Help Desk at x5678 and
request assistance.

How
do I learn more about NT?

the third floor. Kip Finnegan is coordinating this effort.
