Destroying E-mail Through NSU's Webmail

You should destroy unwanted messages. To destroy messages, click the checkboxes of the undesirable messages and click the Destroy Selected button at the bottom of the page. Destroy eliminates the messages permanently, whereas Delete can deposit the messages in you Trash folder.

WebMail must be constantly managed to assure that you don't run out of email space (15 Mb). NSU's WebMail is intended to be a remote email access tool. Your e-mail should be downloaded to your personal computer at regular intervals to clear NSU's e-mail server of your messages therefore assuring that incoming new emails will be received.

Mail box is full but no messages are in the inbox.

Webmail Message Filters     Back to TOP

Message filters allow you to manage and organize your messages.  Message filters can automatically perform certain actions on incoming messages based on criteria you specify. For example, you can create a message filter that automatically; moves incoming messages to a particular folder, deletes messages when they arrive in your inbox, or rejects messages.

Please see the instructions below for setting e-mail message filters on NSU Webmail.

  • Log on to NSU Webmail using your NSU UserID and NSU Password.
  • Click on the Options link to open the Options page.
  • Click on the Filters link to open the Filters page.
  • Click on Add New Filter.
    • Filter Name (Type a descriptive name for this filter.)
    • Filter Description (This is an optional field.)
    • Enable Filter check-box (Check to enable this filter / Remove the check to disable this filter)
    • Rules
      • Select the radio-button for Filter messages where all of the following apply, if it is not selected.

      • Messages in the Deleted Items folder count against your mail quota.
      • Reject (Stops the message from delivering to your Inbox and sends a message to the sender stating that their message has been rejected)
    • Click the Update Filter button to save the filter.

Rejecting all e-mail except e-mail from NSU addresses:

WARNING:
When Rejecting e-mail using filters, be very careful when you select "rules" or when typing any information.   Leaving out a "." or other character(s) can cause the filter to not work, or worse, cause ALL e-mail to be rejected.

RULES:
If From: | does not contain | nsuok.edu (You will have to type nsuok.edu in the last field.)
This will reject any e-mail which doesn't have nsuok.edu as part of the From: field of the message.

Testing Your E-mail Filter
Test your e-mail filter by using Webmail to send an e-mail message to your NSU e-mail address. This will ensure e-mail from nsuok.edu delivers. If you do not receive that e-mail message, check the filter rules to ensure you selected/typed the correct information.

If you have another e-mail account such as Hotmail or Yahoo, use that account to send e-mail to your NSU e-mail address. This message should not deliver to your NSU e-mail Inbox and should return a message to the originating e-mail address (e.g. Hotmail or Yahoo) stating the message was rejected.

E-mail Quota Message    Back to TOP

I've received a message from postmaster@nsuok.edu regarding my e-mail quota.
How do I remove e-mail?

      Message:
Your message quota limit is 15000 Kbytes.
New messages will be rejected until you remove some messages and reduce
the total message size to below your quota limit.

Method 1:

Deleting e-mail using NSU Webmail:
Deleting e-mail using NSU Webmail, moves the deleted e-mail to a Deleted Items folder by default.  That e-mail then needs to be deleted from the Deleted Items folder or it will continue to count against your quota.

  • Use Netscape or IE to browse to NSU Webmail, NSU's web-based e-mail viewer.
  • From the Inbox folder, check the messages to delete and click the Delete messages button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Click the Folders link, to see a selection of folders to choose from.
    NOTE:
When e-mail is deleted it moves to a folder named Deleted Items by default.
  • Click the Deleted Items folder.
  • Check the messages to be deleted and click the Delete messages button.
    NOTE:
All e-mail in the Inbox on the mail server will be removed and not be viewable from another e-mail program.

Method 2:
Netscape or Internet Explorer e-mail programs
If your e-mail program is Netscape or Internet Explorer, having the Leave on server setting checked in Preferences will cause your e-mail to remain on the mail server even though you download the e-mail to your PC for viewing.
[NOTE:  Netscape is used as the example.]

  • In Mail & News Preferences, uncheck the Leave on server box.
  • Click OK to save the settings.
  • Click the button to Get Mail.
  • All e-mail in the Inbox on the mail server has been removed.
[NOTE: Depending on how recently you downloaded your e-mail, you may receive a few new messages or you may notice nothing seems to happen.  Either way, all of your e-mail stored on the mail server will be removed.]

If you're unsure where this setting is within your e-mail program or you're not using one of the two programs referenced above, specify the e-mail program you're using and we'll send more detailed instructions.

Using AOL:    Back to TOP

  • Are you trying to access Blackboard from off-campus using AOL and if so what version?
Blackboard does not work in the AOL Browser. If you use AOL at home, please DO NOT use the AOL Browser. Instead, once you connect to AOL, minimize the AOL Browser, open Internet Explorer, and browse to the NSU HomePage (www.nsuok.edu). Then, click on “Blackboard” and login from there.
If you use the AOL Browser, every single page in Blackboard will always tell you that you are not logged in, and ask you to login again.
  • What error message do you receive when you try to access Blackboard from off-campus?
  • Are you able to log in to NSU's network (NSUnet) from on-campus (e.g. from a lab PC?)

NSU does not recommend or support the use of AOL, as it is incompatible with many campus standard software and subscription services.

Netscape works best as a browser with AOL.

  • Connect to the Internet.
  • Minimize the AOL browser
  • Open your Netscape browser separately.
