Free Program I use!
Below I have included a list of free programs and tools that I use on my desktop computers to replace more costly non-free programs.
Windows Programs
- PDFCreator - Create PDF documents through the print dialog.
- Gaim - A Instant Messanger client for all the common protocols (MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM...) Access all your accounts from one program.
- WorkRave - A program to help prevent repetive stress problems while working with computers. It can get a bit annoying but it is for your own good.
- Putty - A free SSH client also comes with some other very nice SSH tools.
- WinSCP3 - A graphical SFTP/SCP client. No commandline needed.
- GPG4Win - A all in one installer for GnuPG and assorted GUIs.
- Audacity - A audio editing program.
MacOS X Programs
- Fink - Use Fink to bring a world of Open Source software to your Macintosh computer.
- CocoaMySQL - A mysql graphical interface.
- Fugu - A graphical SFTP client.
- Fire - A Instant Messanger client for all the common protocols (MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AIM...) Access all your accounts from one program.
Cross Platform Programs
- Firefox - A high quality web browser. Very extendable!
- Thunderbird - A good mail client for about any type of email account. If you liked netscape mail you will love this.
- bzip2 - A free compression program.
- GnuPG - Free encryption for files or email.
- Video Lan Client - A media player that can play almost any video or audio type. With this there is not need to install 5 billion codecs.
- Audacity - A audio editing program.
- Gimp - A graphics program similar to Photoshop.
- AbiWord - A free open source text editor. Light on hardware demands and very usable.
FireFox Plugins
- FireFTP - A graphical FTP client using your browser.
- SmoothWheel - Get that smoothwheel scrolling like in IE.
- ForecastFox - Get the latest in weather from your FireFox info bar.
- OpenBook - Automatically opens the bookmarks tree in the Add Bookmark dialog.
- FlagFox - FlagFox is a Mozilla FireFox extension which displays the flag of the location of the current server.
- View Cookies - View Cookies let you view the cookies a website leaves on your computer. You can also delete them.
Thunderbird Plugins
- No New Window on Double Click - Prevents Thunderbird from opening a new window when you double click on a folder in the folder pane. If the folder you double click on has subfolders, the folder will expanded/collapsed.
- Enigmail - A plugin to integrate GnuPG use into Thunderbird.
- Buttons! - Add some very useful buttons to your Thunderbird menu bar.
- MagicSLRAdd the Send Later and Get all email (all accounts) buttons.
